Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a principal focus of The Lanka Hospitals Corporation PLC (Lanka Hospitals). Apart from providing affordable excellence in health with first - class medical treatment and facilities, Lanka Hospitals, as a responsible corporate citizen, engages in several initiatives to give back to the community in which it operates.

Reaching out

Lanka Hospitals established a fund through voluntary staff donations to aid Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North and East. The programme was organised by the Wellness Club, an internal staff committee which coordinates all staff - related social and welfare activates. Altogether, the Lanka Hospitals staff donated over one million rupees worth of milk products and nutrients, along with clothes, linen and dry rations.

Our CSR Heart Surgery baby doing well, a year on

pace maker surgery

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) affects over 2000 children annually in Sri Lanka. Many can lead normal lives with corrective, life saving surgery, but cannot afford the procedure. In June 2008, assisted by Medtronic UK, Lanka Hospitals’ Heart Centre performed corrective surgery to save the life of a nine month old baby who had CHD. Diagnosed with a hole in the heart, she looked no more than three months due to her growth-stunting condition. Lanka Hospitals funded the baby’s medical treatment as a CSR initiative and the renowned paediatric cardiac surgeon and consultant cardiologists also provided their services free of charge. Medtronic in the UK kindly donated a pacemaker to the child when she underwent the second surgery. Following the successful surgical procedure, the child is living a normal life and is as strong and healthy as any other child in her age group.

Promoting awareness for breast cancer in Sri Lanka

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in Sri Lankan females, accounting for approximately 22% of all detected cases. Cancer is often curable with early detection, but alarmingly, many women in Sri Lanka either do not know this or opt to suffer in silence. October is international Breast Cancer awareness month. During this month, our Health Check Department distributed pink ribbons, encouraged all women and staff to wear them and extended a 10% discount on the Wellwoman health screening package. The message communicated was to regularly check for lumps by self-examination and that a simple mammogram annually could save the life of a mother, sister or friend. As a result, many women sought further information about breast cancer and reacted positively by taking steps to check and seek treatment, if required

Lighting the sky in Blue for World Diabetes Day - Diabetes in Children

Everyday, 200 children develop Diabetes worldwide.
Diabetes is becoming more prevalent in the Sri Lankan population, on par with the levels in developed countries. The hospital continued its CSR initiatives by collaborating with the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) to build awareness for the 2008 theme ‘Diabetes in Children’. IDF launched a global campaign to 'Bring Diabetes to Light' by lighting iconic monuments and sites in blue to mark World Diabetes Day (WDD). Sponsored by Sri Lanka Insurance LIFE, the front of the majestic landmark building, Galle Face Hotel, was lit up in blue for four days (November 12-15) while the campaign’s Blue Circle logo shone on the hotel's front wall on WDD, November 14. The hospital placed postcards in public places and in rooms at the hotel, inviting people to view the lit-up hotel and explaining what the event was in aid of. The event was announced live on private radio stations, with listeners requested to send in digital photos to the hospital from their mobiles to win an Executive Health Check. The hospital also gave a free health test for diabetes and a 10% discount on the Diabetic Health Check during the month. As with the campaign for the early detection of breast cancer the previous month, several patients and visitors made use of the free and discounted services. As part of this campaign, one of our Dieticians wrote an article for a leading newspaper about the possible onset of diabetes in children with unhealthy eating habits, providing advice and popularising the global IPD campaign for WDD, from Rio de Janeiro to Hong Kong and the leaning Tower of Pisa. This helped put Sri Lanka on the map as part of this international campaign.

Providing healthcare for children

The hospital’s Dieticians Department conducted a dietary advice programme on February 21, 2009 at Shilpa Children’s Trust, an orphanage in Narahenpita. The aim of the initiative was to provide awareness on health to the orphans - displaced children, unskilled youth, impoverished women and single mothers. The orphans at Shilpa have to depend on corporate or social service organisations to aid them, especially with regard to their health. The programme assessed the height, weight and body mass index (BMI) of each child and provided dietary advice and advice on other health matters.

Giving back to the community through shramadana

In March 2009, due to the recurrence of dengue and reports that it could turn out to be an epidemic, the hospital’s Wellness Club members decided to thoroughly clean up the hospital surroundings and neighbourhood. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Colombo Municipal Council and its garbage collection centre. The hospital staff started early on a Sunday morning and cleaned out all drains, lopped off overhanging branches and picked up leaves and disposables strewn on the roads. Those who participated in the shramadana campaign were satisfied that they had contributed time and energy to ward off a dangerous epidemic.
