Choose a Career in Nursing

The value of human life, service to humanity and professional improvement of oneself and rendering nursing care at a level of excellence is considered the Philosophy of Nursing. To become a professional nurse you should also be an efficient communicator with good community service skills.

The School of Nursing of Lanka Hospitals was established in the year 2001 by Apollo Hospitals, India. Years later the name was changed to Lanka Hospitals School of Nursing when the majority ownership of the hospital was transferred to the Sri Lankan Government. Since its commencement, up to year 2020, seventeen batches have passed out from the school as qualified nurses, and are now employed locally and overseas. The teaching staff at the Lanka Hospitals School of Nursing are experienced tutors. They have received their Diploma in Teaching and Supervision from the Government Post-Basic School of Nursing, Colombo.

The Lanka Hospitals School of Nursing is located at No. 598, Elvitigala Mawatha, Narahenpita, Colombo 05, adjacent to Lanka Hospitals. The clinical training for all nurses is conducted at Lanka Hospitals. It is registered as a training institute by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC)

The Three Year Nursing Training Programme ( NVQ Level 6 Nursing course )

The training programme in General Nursing conducted by the school will prepare students to become a general nurse. After completion they will be qualified to join the Nursing Department of Lanka Hospitals. In the first year, students will learn about the Main Principles of Nursing, other introductory subjects as well as receive practical training. In the 2nd and 3rd year of the programme students will learn more advanced nursing procedures through clinical and practical training conducted at Lanka Hospitals.

The Diploma in General Nursing will be awarded by the Lanka Hospitals School of Nursing following the successful completion of the three-year programme. The students will be following the NVQ level 6 Nursing curriculum approved by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) and National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA). Therefore, at the end of the course students will also be awarded the internationally recognized NVQ Level 06 Nursing Qualification by the TVEC.

Selection Criteria

Height – Minimum 4’10 healthy unmarried indviduals
Age – 18-25 years.(Few male candidates will be accommodated)
Passed the G.C.E Ordinary Level Examination including Sinhala/Tamil, Science, Mathematics, English Language
Possess a minimum of three passes in G.C.E Advanced Level examination in any stream
Possess a minimum of one or two passes in G.C.E Advanced level examination in the science stream
